For many older adults, getting to a doctor’s office, pharmacy or medical test is not just a matter of convenience – it can determine whether they receive appropriate care to manage their health and remain independent at home.
Older adults are more likely to reduce driving due to vision changes, mobility limitations, medication side effects or the cost of maintaining a vehicle. When safe, affordable transportation alternatives aren’t available, they may skip appointments, delay preventive care or become socially isolated.
home52 Transportation helps bridge that gap in Hamilton and Clermont counties by offering specialized transportation services that help older adults get to medical appointments, and elsewhere.
Hamilton County resident Selena, 74, has been able to keep up with frequent medical appointments because of home52 Transportation. Her rides are free, thanks to grant funding secured by home52 Transportation for riders in Hamilton and Clermont counties.
Before finding home52 Transportation, Selena relied on ride share services and cabs – options that didn’t provide the level of support she needed and that quickly became unaffordable on her fixed income. This grant-funded transportation fills a practical and financial gap, helping older adults like Selena get to important appointments without having to choose between health needs and other essentials.
Like many home52 riders, Selena has family nearby that help out when they can, but they face time constraints including work schedules, childcare and other responsibilities.
Selena shared that home52 Transportation’s booking process was straightforward and respectful. When she – or any rider – calls to schedule a ride, staff ask questions to determine what level of support is needed – such as help getting from her home to the vehicle or whether she uses a wheelchair or other mobility devices – so the right vehicle and driver can be assigned.
An automated call alerts riders about five minutes before pickup, and drivers verify riders’ identity with security questions. Riders also have the option to bring an advocate (aged 18 or older) with them in the vehicle.
“Drivers are always on time and sometimes a bit early, which gives me peace of mind that I will be on time for my appointment,” shared Selena. She credits home52 Transportation with making it possible to keep up with frequent medical care without the financial strain and uncertainty of last-minute ride scrambling.
home52 Transportation regularly collects feedback from riders to ensure the service meets expectations. Riders in Clermont County, where the service is relatively new, have shared positive feedback in post-ride surveys. They report that drivers are friendly, always willing to talk with them during the trip, and respect each riders’ level of independence.
“This doctor appointment was important for me to attend so I didn't have to end up in the hospital and home52 Transportation was great getting me there,” shared one Clermont County rider.
Another Clermont County rider shared, “home52 does a fantastic job. The driver was very pleasant and considerate and made sure he located me.”
